British Royal Navy’s Second Sea Lord Visits NSWC Dahlgren Division

DAHLGREN, Va. – UK Royal Navy Second Sea Lord Vice Adm. Jonathan Woodcock examines the damage caused by a hypervelocity projectile during a visit to the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Electromagnetic Railgun facility June 10. The hypervelocity projectile is a next-generation, guided projectile capable of completing multiple missions for gun systems such as the Navy 5-Inch, 155-mm, and future railguns. The second sea lord – responsible for the delivery of the British naval service’s current and future personnel, equipment and infrastructure – visited NSWCDD with his delegation of British military officials for briefings on the command’s technological programs and testing facilities. “Our Electromagnetic Railgun Program began in cooperation with the UK – leveraging development work they had already done – giving us the footing to develop a program at a much further advanced state today,” said Jed Ryan, NSWCDD International Partnering Office lead. “We are also excited about newer areas of existing or potential collaboration, such as directed energy weapons programs that include radio frequency and high energy lasers.” (U.S. Navy Photo by Andy Revelos/Released)
