NSWCDD engineer Helmer Flores demonstrates how a shipboard Collective Protection System (CPS) filter housing works

WASHINGTON – Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineer Helmer Flores demonstrates how a shipboard Collective Protection System (CPS) filter housing works while briefing Rear Adm. Brian Antonio, program executive officer for the Littoral Combat Ships program, on the system and its capabilities during the NSWCDD Briefing and Technical Demonstration held at Naval Sea System Command headquarters, Nov. 3. NSWCDD chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) defense engineers designed the shipboard collective protection system to protect Sailors, critical operations, and equipment within selected areas of a ship, or zones, from CBR contamination when the ship is operating in a contaminated environment. Personnel in the protected zone do not need to wear protective clothing or masks which impose heat stress and can impact crew members’ performance. (U.S. Navy photos by John Joyce/Released)
